Black History Month 2021 Nigeria- Celebrate Women Leaders in the Africa's Diaspora![edit]

African Women on Board(AWB), Wikimedia Nigeria Foundation Inc and AfroCROWD Invite you to join an international Wikipedia Edit-a-thon on Women leaders in African and the African Diaspora. With events in Nigeria and around the world online. Starting from February 18th, 2021 at AWB Headquarter in Lagos, Nigeria with Wikipedia training, and invite participation online throughout the remainder of February. On February 27th, we meet online to celebrate the achievements of African women in the Diaspora with speakers and a recap of progress. Follow #BlackWikiStory on Twitter and Instagram where we will join other Black HIstory Month highlights in the week.

How to prepare[edit]

  • Register to get the link to the event on Zoom?: the entire event will take place online on Zoom.
  • Have your laptop or tablet ready: Editing Wikipedia is easier with a keyboard.
  • Have a published source to cite: Google is handy, but we will also have the fortune of a Schomburg librarian joining us who can help if you are interested in anything in their collections. If you like, bring an academic paper or other reliable source of information to cite, to support your addition to Wikipedia. You will use Wikipedia to distribute information from this source. Try to bring the highest quality most reputable source you can find for the information.
  • Create a Wikipedia account, if you do not have one already.
  • Social Media: Tweet, like, comment or follow us on social media. Our hashtags for today are #AfroCBLackWikiHistory and #AfroCROWD. Our Twitter handle is @AfroCROWDit and on Instagram and Facebook are @AfroCROWD.

What is Wikipedia?[edit]

Wikipedia is the fifth most visited website on earth (World Economic Forum), and the most-used encyclopedia ever. A couple million people have written bits of it, but most of Wikipedia is written by tens of thousands of volunteers around the world.[7] (See the statistics page for more information.) We start with a few improvements, learn, and build up from there. You, can, too!

Today's mission: Add at least one sentence or other contribution to Wikipedia about a notable woman of African descent.

Editing contribution types for new Wikipedia editors:[edit]

Is this your very first time? Try this:

  • Add a biographical sentence: Start with a name, a birthday, an occupation or title,  what they famously did,  and (very importantly) a citation to verify your information from a credible source(s).

How to make a citation (bibliographical reference):[edit]

1) First, click on the pencil icon on the right to begin using "Visual Editor". Visual editor makes editing easier - like writing a school paper.

2) In Visual Editor, click on the area you want to add the citation. Then click cite. If you have a website as a source, add the website to the blank area.

If you do not have a website source, click manual and follow the prompts. Then click publish. If you have questions, ask a Wikimedia coach or go to Wikipedia:Tutorial/Citing sources.

3) Then click publish.
