English: About 10 years ago a special nematic phase, twist-bend nematic (Ntb) has been discovered. Adding chiral dopants to Ntb phase leads to appearance of the chiral Ntb phase, which under alternating electric field can form the specific state, named oblique heliconical cholesteric (ChOH) possessing the Bragg diffraction (so-called selective reflection of the visible spectrum of light) and maximum of the wavelength of reflection can switch by applied voltage. These oblique heliconical cholesterics have great potential in reflecting display, tunable filters, holograms and other applications.
The usage of the photosensitive chiral dopants (for instance, chiral azo-compounds) leads to red shift of wavelength of selective light reflection of visible spectrum of the irradiated area of ChOH. Owing to application of the photosensitive chiral dopants, the wavelength of selective reflection can be switched by both the electric field and light. Photography shows the photosensitive ChOH, based on chiral azo-compound ChD-3816 characterized by reversible photo-isomerisation, under alternating electric field with voltage U = 30 V and frequency 1 kHz at 27 °C. The image is coat of arms of Ukrainе (i.e. Tryzub) irradiated by UV light (365 nm) within 30 min. LC cell dimensions are 20 mm width, 25 mm length and 20.5 micron thickness.Українська: Близько 10 років тому була відкрита особлива нематична фаза, нематик із закрученим вигином або твіст-бенд нематик (Ntb). Додавання до фази Ntb хіральних добавок призводить до появи хіральної фази Ntb, яка під впливом змінного електричного поля може утворювати специфічний стан, який називається косим геліконічним холестериком (ChOH), якому притаманна дифракція Брегга (так зване явище селективного відбивання видимого спектру світла), і, максимум довжини хвилі селективного відбивання може змінюватися під дією прикладеної напруги. Ці косі геліконічні холестерики мають великий потенціал у відображенні дисплеїв, перемикаючих фільтрах, голографії тощо. Використання фоточутливих хіральних добавок (наприклад, хіральних азосполук) призводить до червоного зсуву довжини хвилі селективного відбивання світла видимого спектра опромінюваної ділянки ChOH. Завдяки застосуванню фоточутливих хіральних добавок, довжина хвилі селективного відбивання може перемикатися як електричним полем, так і світлом.
На фотографії показано фоточутливий ChOH, отриманий на основі хіральної азосполуки ChD-3816, під впливом змінного електричного поля з напругою U = 30 В і частотою 1 кГц при 27 °C.
