New version of the AddPrefix gadget

Hello, everyone!

For the past few weeks, I have been working on a replacement of the old AddPrefix gadget that was a bit faulty. The new gadget, which is now enabled by default for everyone, works quite differently.

The new gadget will remove prefixes when you start editing, and it will then add prefixes when you save the page. This will happen for templates, links and categories. This way, editing in the Incubator should be as similar to editing a normal wiki as possible.

It should work in all wikitext modes, including the 2017 wikitext editor ("wikitext in Visual Editor"), and most importantly, on the mobile site. If you notice any problems with it, please report them here, and I will try to fix them as soon as possible. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 09:33, 6 May 2022 (UTC)

Please exempt categories from being automatically added to the main category. I don't want all categories to automatically become part of [[Category:wp/grc]]. And if possible, make this gadget not mandatory. It does not help me at all. --PastelKos (talk) 09:12, 14 May 2022 (UTC)

@PastelKos: I have now made it so that only articles are automatically added to the root category. Note, however, that the root category will not exist at all when the wiki is imported to a proper domain, so one should not rely on it for a category tree. @Vipz: It is important to many (most?) projects because that's the way number of articles are counted like {{Wp/khw/NUMBEROFARTICLES}}: Count the number of pages in that category. So ideally all content pages for a test wiki should be in the root category. The root category is not carried over when a wiki is imported, so it is really just an Incubator maintenance category of sorts. I am looking into the possibility of adding it automatically in the Wikimedia Incubator extension, however, instead of it having to be added (semi-)manually to each page. Koavf, take a look on the page Wp/rmc/Šerutňi_sera, the link Fiňiko kalo čhib (Kaalengo tšimb) is red because of the automatic add of the prefix Wp/rmc/ before the prefix Wp/rmf. --Adehertogh (talk) 16:48, 15 May 2022 (UTC)

@Adehertogh, Koavf: There was a check for this so that you could link to almost all pages from other test wikis without a prefix being added, but it did not work if you just linked to the info page ("Wp/xyz"). This should be fixed now. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 11:23, 16 May 2022 (UTC)

Generally, dealing with namespaces like and interwiki links (like "meta:") is quite difficult (because there is no sure way in Javascript to know what is a namespace name and what is an interwiki prefix)… I have made some custom exceptions for common terms, and will add Wikivodič to that list so it is fixed for you at least, but it could re-appear for other project names, so I will try to think of a better long-term solution. @Ninjastrikers, the Latin font for Wikipedia logos is Linux Libertine. See foundation:Visual identity guidelines.

Also, check that the logo file is compatible with all the necessary resolutions. It's a tricky thing that I don't understand very well myself, but User:Odder is good at this.

About changing language naming

When I was translating the Incubator main page, it shows the language name as「うちなーぐち」. However, I also want to add the Kanji form of the name so that the name will be 「沖縄口/うちなーぐち」but I don't know where can change the naming. The name on the Incubator main page comes from the software configuration. There are several languages that have multiple names, but we are trying to stop this practice and not to add any new ones. Thanks for the information. While I have seen other languages that have multiple names are written in different writing systems for example Latin and Cyrillic, they are not compatible as they cannot be written at the same time thus may require a converter, in that case we can choose one script to write the project so the name can also be decided by looking what script is used to write the project. However, I think that for Okinawan the situation is different. For うちなーぐち and 沖縄口, うちなーぐち is the pronunciation of 沖縄口, and they are compatible which means they are under the same writing system and both of them are used for the names of this language(while such a situation do not exist in Japanese as the naming is unified and using kana to write the name is rarely seen). Therefore originally I think both of them can be used as the naming, but if is not allowed, then there's no way. Another question I want to ask is about the font types. Remove the GeoCrumbs extension from Incubator

Hello all,

There is a MediaWiki extension installed here called mw:Extension:GeoCrumbs. It is supposed to add a trail of "breadcrumbs" below the page title to Wikivoyage pages using the magic word {{#isin:}}. However, if a page is a subpage, it will show links to the pages it is a subpage of instead. Since all content pages on the Incubator are technically subpages (of index pages like Wp/anp), the effect is that the extension just duplicates the built-in links to subpages that MediaWiki already produces.

Therefore I would like to remove the extension from the Wikimedia Incubator, since it doesn't actually serve any useful purpose here. Please let us know if you agree or disagree with this suggestion, since we need to show community consensus in order to make that change (I have already posted a task about it in Phabricator: phab:T316109). Either way, I will withdraw this proposal to remove the extension from the Incubator, and work on alternative ways to solve the issue with double subpage links. New gadget for interwiki links on test Wiktionaries

A few days ago, I enabled a new gadget here that helps with interwiki links for Wiktionaries. On real Wiktionary projects, interwiki links are handled automatically by something called Cognate – what that does is that it automatically links to other Wiktionary editions about words with the same spelling as the page you're on. The new gadget, which was made by Nikki (with some additions by myself), replicates this here on the Wikimedia Incubator. It will not link to other languages in the Incubator, but it will link to existing Wiktionary editions.

@Rocky 734: Interwiki links in Wiktionary purely reflect spelling, without any consideration about the meanings of words. This is a necessity because of the way Wiktionary pages are built – you have multiple languages on the same page, so a page doesn't have a meaning. Take, for instance, wikt:en:barn, which has entries for several languages with radically different meanings. Even within the same language, one word may mean several different things, of course.

So, yes, the only way to add an interwiki link to the Hindi Wiktionary from Wt/sat/ᱩᱞ would be to create an entry for "ᱩᱞ" in the Hindi Wiktionary. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 01:29, 7 September 2022 (UTC)

Since I posted the message above, that gadget has been merged with a new gadget (now also enabled by default) I've been developing, as some of you have noticed. It lets you add the new {{INTERWIKI}} template to articles semi-automatically when you click the "Add interlanguage links" or "Add Wikidata link" link in the sidebar. When you do, a dialog opens that lets you add a Wikidata item directly, or a link to an existing article in a Wikimedia project, or just an old-style interwiki link (like "en:Something"), and the interwiki template will be added to the article. Category sorting

Hello all,

This week, a change to the Wikimedia Incubator extension (that supports the extra features here on the Wikimedia Incubator) went live. The change makes it so that all pages that are part of a test wiki are automatically sorted by the actual page title, and not by the prefix. Before this change, the page "Wp/xxx/Something" would be sorted under "W" in categories, because the page name technically begins with "W". Now, however, this page will be sorted under "S", because that is the actual page name for the page.

Many test wikis circumvented this behaviour by specifying sort keys in articles manually, as {{DEFAULTSORT:Something}} or [[Category:Wp/xxx/Articles|Something]] (or by just using the first letter from the article name). In the past 24 hours, my bot has been going through these articles and removing these sort keys since they are no longer necessary (I'm sorry if this has caused any disruption). The bot has only removed sort keys if the sort key was identical to the page name (sans prefix) or if it was identical to the first letter of the page name (again, sans prefix). Any sort key that was not identical to the page name or the first letter have been preserved.

No, unfortunately language-dependent sorting is something that can only be set for an entire wiki, not for individual categories. But once a wiki is approved and gets its own domain, that type of sorting is possible as long as the correct settings are set in the language's MessagesXxx.php file. @Koavf: No, my bot has only removed sort keys where the sort key would lead to the exact same result* as sorting by the real pagename (i.e. "Wp/xxx/This part"). If there was any difference whatsoever between the real pagename and the sort key (like sorting Ö as Oe or Ŋ as ng, the sort key was left alone.

(* Well, in the cases where only the first letter was used the software would actually sort it as sortkey+full pagename; so [[Category:Categoryname|S]] on a page "Wp/xxx/Something" would have been sorted by the software as "SWp/xxx/Something", leading "Wp/xxx/Something" to be sorted after "Wp/xxx/Sully" if the latter page had no sortkey. I apologize for the limitation in our current configuration. It is not possible to set up specific configurations for individual test wikis at this time. This would require Live draw sgp special handling in the Citoid and/or Visual Editor extensions, which would be a complex task. Hi Nnadigoodluck! Unfortunately it is not possible to configure this on a per-test wiki basis. Any configuration we add following that guide would apply to the entire Incubator, not a single test wiki. Having different configuration per test wiki is not trivial – I believe it would require some special handling in the Citoid and/or Visual Editor extensions, so that makes it quite difficult unfortunately. About adding Common.css

I think we need this extension here on Incubator, as one of the most major Wikivoyage-related extensions. Is this a correct place to ask for enabling new extensions, or is there a more proper procedure to it? -Vipz (talk) 07:40, 29 November 2022 (UTC)

@Vipz: This is indeed the correct place to ask. However, the extension will not work out-of-the-box (by using Wikidata properties) here on Incubator, because pages aren't technically connected to Wikidata the way they are in normal Wikivoyage projects (which is why we need the {{INTERWIKI}} template+gadget to mimic the interwiki functionality).

I could try to make a template that mimics its functionality though, that would automatically be replaced by the magic word from the extension when a project is approved and gets its own domain, but it will take some time. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 11:51, 1 December 2022 (UTC)

New update RUINS the Zealandic Wiktionary Main Page, please fix ASAP!

Hi, I'm really a fan of many recent adaptations to the code. However, there is one thing that absolutely drives me insane. It has recently become impossible to link categories. You know, on other wikis using MediaWiki software, you can link categories by inserting [[:Category:Blah]]. The colon in the beginning prevents the page from being categorized; instead, a plain link to the category will appear.

However, I just tried to update the Main Page of the Zealandic Wiktionary (Wt/zea/Vòblad). It makes extensive use of such links. All of these have now been ruined by automatic prefixing, making the Main Page almost worthless. And what's worse: I can't restore it or the same erroneous links will be re-added automatically. Thank you very much. I must say this gadget comes in handy most of the time, but of course I can turn it off temporarily when editing the Main Page. I test every change thoroughly, but there are still bound to be some things I didn't think to test, so I need to know about errors if I am to fix them. Why does this look the way it looks

Okay, I know damn well that you aren't a free markup service, but I have a problem that you might be able to fix sooner than I. I just created Template:Wt/zea/Swadeshliesten, to be used for navigation through the various Swadesh lists at the Zealandic Wiktionary. I decided to add work-in-progress signs to each link, for these lists definitely aren't all blue and ready for use. But here it comes: it looks very strange. The links appear on top of each other and except for the first one, they are in true type, even though I used neither a break nor a tt tag.

I have created similar templates with the same borrowed wiki code for almost twenty years now, and this never occurred before. The cause appears to be in the Work-in-Progress templates, but they contain nothing but a simple file and a description between "noinclude" tags. I just can't see what the cause is, let alone the solution. So I hope some of you can. Steinbach (talk) 12:37, 10 December 2022 (UTC)

Simple English ISO 639 Code

Hello, and I was thinking of maybe starting a test Wikiproject here in Basic English (known as Simple English on Wikiprojects) for WikiVoyage. However, I looked over the manual to creating a test project and it says that I need a valid ISO 639 code for the language to start a test project, and Basic English doesn't have one. Great point. First off, the Simple English projects have no explicit definition of what constitutes "simple English", whereas "Basic English" does have an explicit corpus. Secondly, simple projects would not get approved today because we have different standards. Finally, the kind of English used in a travel guide should be fairly basic anyway, so it's not obvious that there is a need for a separate version. —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 00:01, 15 December 2022 (UTC)

Yes; there are many Wikimedia projects in languages/language codes that wouldn't be approved today, and Simple English is one of them. The projects that existed before the language proposal policy are grandfathered in, but further projects in those languages will likely not be approved unless they meet the current criteria.
